Convict Caterpillar

Xanthopastis timais

Description:

These caterpillars are voracious and has preferably to feed on leaves of some sort des lilies. There were strange things with a Xanthopastis moth caterpillars group that I collected and kept in the container. Some of the caterpillars practiced cannibalism, the largest caterpillars gathered around a smaller caterpillar, drew his head and ate the body. After a few days, the caterpillars who practiced cannibalism began to act as if they are sick, as intestinal infection or something similar: they seemed to have difficulties to remove feces and twisted the abomem constantly. Caterpillars that survived were killed in the pre-pupal stage.

Habitat:

Host plant: Hymenocallis littoralis
