Black Swallowtail caterpillar, fifth instar

Papilio polyxenes asterias

Description:

Bright green caterpillar with black bands and yellow spots (last instar). When threatened, this caterpillar extends two bright orange, foul smelling "horns" called the osmeterium. Feeding on bronze fennel in the garden. The caterpillars of this species change color with each molt.

Habitat:

Suburban garden.
