Hericium erinaceum
Edible and medicinal mushroom. It can be identified by its tendency to grow all the spines out from one group (rather than branches). It presents rather long spines (greater than 1 cm length) and appears on hardwoods. In the wild, these mushrooms are common during late summer and fall on hardwoods. It has a whitish color when young that gets yellowish with time and finally brown when aged.
At open cuts in alive trees. Usually on hardwood.
