Blue Land Crab

Cardisoma guanhumi

Description:

Large blue land crab. Usually there is a larger difference in the size of the claws.

Habitat:

Found on the sidewalk outside a restaurant located on a mangrove shoreline.

Notes:

On this same trip to the Keys I was sitting on a rock along a mangrove shoreline. Taking pictures of some mollusks. I noticed a large land crab hole. A branch from a White Mangrove tree had been pulled down into the hole. It was bobbing up and down. I realized a crab in the hole was feeding on the leaves. When I was growing up in South Florida. South of Miami these crabs, during their migrations to the bay for breeding, would be crossing the roads in large numbers. Mile after mile dead crabs lined the roads. Flat tires would also be common.
