American Bird Grasshopper

Schistocerca americana

Grasshoppers have antennae that are generally shorter than their body and short ovipositors. They also have pinchers or mandibles that cut and tear off food. Schistocerca, commonly called bird grasshoppers, is a genus of grasshoppers, many of which swarm as locusts.

It is native to North America, where it occurs in the eastern United States, Mexico, and the Bahamas.

In certain countries, grasshoppers are eaten as a good source of protein.
