Spider wasp

Entypus unifasciatus

Description:

Black, with yellow antennae, and iridescent black wings with large, diffuse orange spot on each forewing. Large, about 22 mm or more in body length.

Habitat:

Suburban back yard, fenced, with sparse grass, violets, plantain, and other "weeds." Leaf litter hides many spiders that this female would be hunting.

Notes:

This is a common species of Pompilidae in our area. Females hunt and paralyze large wolf spiders as food for their larval offspring.
