Ring-necked Snake

Diadophis punctatus

Description:

This small snake (this one was less than 5 inches and very thin) is black with a small, light yellow ring around it's neck and a yellow bellow with a double row of black dots. The scales are very iridescent.

Habitat:

Found in my backyard underneath some artificial cover. My yard borders a woodland and has plenty of trees and cover available.

Notes:

This snake is displaying a very common posture in the third photo. it is tucking its' head beneath its' coils to help protect it from attack. The eye is bluish because it is getting ready to shed its skin.
