Diamond Python

Morelia spilota spilota

Notes:

When we lived in Sydney, diamond pythons were the snakes we most frequently had in care. This 2-metre specimen was our first! I can't actually remember why he came into care in the first place, but we had just moved into a house which had two bathrooms, so my husband decided that the python could have the run of one of the bathrooms while it was being rehabilitated (which is how we got this shot with the mirror). My husband set up a tree in the bathtub for it and everything. It totally gave me the creeps. This particular snake had a really strong odour as well, like rotting straw. I just avoided the bathroom entirely, except for a quick check every now and again to reassure myself that it was still lurking in there. Unfortunately, a few days later, the python was gone. We were baffled... until we climbed up on the bench and found a massive hole behind the top of the mirror that went into the internal walls of the house. We never saw this snake again (which I am grateful for, especially as we had a new kitten!!) but I SWEAR I could smell that rotting straw smell in that bathroom for months afterwards. We learnt a lesson from that and got some secure tanks. Diamond pythons are closely related to carpet pythons but are restricted to the coast of NSW.
