Sorry, this is a poor image taken on a phone. But it was small (about 6 inches maybe), with dark black bands/checkered keeled scales, on a white/light yellow belly.
This really young water snake was found very close to a small stream near a rural area in Oswego NY. The area is was found was woody, and was within 10 meters of the stream.
