Leaf Cutter Ant Trails

Atta cephalotes

Description:

These are the trails of the Leaf Cutter Ant. They are about 20 cm wide. Primary trails are very clean and often slightly excavated into the soil from the passage of literally millions of ants during night time foraging. Clean trails are in current use and by nightfall will be full of ants. These trails can exceed hundreds of meters in length, what would be the equivalent of many kilometers for a larger species. The ant species in this region is Atta cephalotes (see spotting of the ants: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/139...).

Habitat:

Mayan ruins of Calakmul, Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.
