Polistes carolina
The Red Wasp is one of many different social wasps referred to as paper wasps. This particular species has a red or rust colored body with smoky brown to black wings. They are 1⁄2” to 11⁄4” in length and have slender bodies with long legs that dangle below their bodies. These wasps have a very long stinger at the end of their abdomens.
Nests are generally built in areas that invite frequent human interaction, such as under the eaves of houses and buildings or attached to trees or shrubs.
Although generally not aggressive, they can be provoked into defending their nests
