Red Paper Wasp

Polistes carolina

Description:

The Red Wasp is one of many different social wasps referred to as paper wasps. This particular species has a red or rust colored body with smoky brown to black wings. They are 1⁄2” to 11⁄4” in length and have slender bodies with long legs that dangle below their bodies. These wasps have a very long stinger at the end of their abdomens.

Habitat:

Nests are generally built in areas that invite frequent human interaction, such as under the eaves of houses and buildings or attached to trees or shrubs.

Notes:

Although generally not aggressive, they can be provoked into defending their nests
