Description:

Females are a buff and brown color. They have a white wing patch that is often visible when swimming or resting. Their heads are large and squarish with a steep forehead. They have a yellow edge to their dark bills.

Habitat:

This female has taken a break from feeding and is preening on the ice in a pond at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge.

Icy on the ponds today and not many ducks. Going to come back to the refuge after it warms up for a few days to see who returns.

Nice one; I spotted my first gadwall in January but it was very far away. Nice to see one up closer. :>)
