Cuckoo bee

Nomada sp.

Description:

About 8-9 millimeters, colored black and yellow with reddish brown as shown.

Habitat:

This bee was on a lone, blooming saltcedar tree (Tamarix sp.) in a vast field of degraded shortgrass prairie with sunflower, yucca, prickly-pear cacti, and scattered elm trees.

Notes:

The bee was riding out very gusty winds, hanging on for dear life. Nomada are among many solitary bees that "sleep" by clinging to foliage during the night and inclement weather.
