Praticamente em qualquer lugar em sua zona de distribuição que contenha seus hospedeiros. Habitats naturais incluem florestas, bosques, pastos e campos. Habitats que não são naturais incluem cidades urbanas e suburbanas. Encontrada em habitat urbano no 16º andar de um prédio.

Pretty much anywhere in their zone of distribution that contains their hosts. Natural habitats include forests, woods, pastures and fields. Unnatural habitats include the urban and suburban cities. Found in an urban habitat on the 16th floor of a flat.

Identificado pelo Cesar do Insetologia. O sujeito retratado é um macho. Cryptanura é um membro da ordem Hymenoptera, subordem Apocrita, onde está inclusa no grupo Parasitica, superfamília Ichneumonidea, família Ichneumonidae, subfamília Cryptinae, tribo Cryptini e subtribo Mesostesina.

Cryptanura pertence à um complexo anel mimético envolvendo pelo menos duas famílias de Hemípteros, esperanças (Orthoptera: Ensifera), moscas (Diptera) e baratas (Blattodea). Todos estes necessitam de comprovação científica para determinar se fazem parte do anel mimético. Exemplos de Hemípteros visualmente inclusos neste anel mimético com a Cryptanura são o Holymenia clavigera (já estudado, evidências sugerem com força sua presença no mimetismo envolvendo a vespa) e Echthrus reluctator; o mimetismo extende-se além do comportamento apesar da ecologia ser diferente. Cryptanura forrageiam por hospedeiros escondidos através de rápidas varridas no solo com suas antenas, um comportamento também notado em Holymenia clavigera e Echthrus reluctator, sugerindo que esta técnica foi identicamente assumida pelo percevejo através da Ichneumonídea. Estes movimentos nas antenas são normalmente pistas que envolvem predação, estado de alerta e cortejo para acasalamento; nenhuma dessas pistas parece ser o caso dos Holymenia clavigera em casos descritos, indicando que o percevejo gasta energia movendo as antenas exclusivamente como uma técnica mimética para imitar a Ichneumonídea. Muitas vespas Cryptinae são supostamente parasitóides externos de muitos hospedeiros, incluindo Lepidoptera. Informações sobre o processo larva-adulto serão apreciadas e creditadas.

Identified by Cesar of Insetologia. The subject portrayed is a male. Cryptanura are members of the order Hymenoptera, suborder Apocrita, where they are included in the group "Parasitica", superfamily Ichneumonoidea, family Ichneumonidae, subfmaily Cryptinae, tribe Cryptini and subtribe Mesostesina.

Cryptanura belongs to a complex mimetic ring involving at least two families of Hemipterans, katydids (Orthoptera: Ensifera), flies (Diptera) and cockroaches (Blattodea). All of these require scientific confirmations as to their participation in the ring. Examples of Hemipterans visually inside this mimetic ring with Cryptanura are the Holymenia clavigera (studies strongly suggested their participation in the mimetic ring involving Cryptanura) and Echthrus reluctator; the mimetism is also extended towards the behaviour despite the different ecology. They forage for hidden hosts through rapid sweeps on the floor with the antennae, a behaviour that is also noted on Holymenia clavigera and Echthrus reluctator which suggests that technique was identically assumed by the bug from the Ichenumonid. Such antennal movements are normally cues for predation, courtship or to demonstrate they are alert; none of which seems to be the case for Holymenia clavigera on the described cases, indicating that the bug spends energy moving its antennae exclusively as a mimetic technique to imitate the Ichneumonid. Most Cryptinae wasps are presumed to be external parasitoids of many hosts, including Lepidoptera. Informations on the larva-adult process will be appreciated and credited.

The mimetic hoverflies Sphecomyia vittata, Ceriana signifera, Tenthredomyia abbreviate and Spilomyia hamiifera hold their antennae in positions which suggest the geniculate antennae of wasps. This requires scientific confirmation.

Tiny Lymeon wasps are also similar-looking to Cryptanura; still without confirmation.

Other possible insects that seem to be part of this complex mimetic ring but still require scientific confirmation except, maybe, Holymenia clavigera:
