Small tree with many trunks. Bark looks thin and scaly. Some of the smaller twigs have long thorns on them as can be seen in the picture. I can't tell the leaf arrangement; may be whorled or alternate. Except for the leaf tip, the leaves appear to be untoothed.

Any ID suggestions on this tree? I'm really curious to find out what it is. I spotted it on the Dowdell's Knob trail, F.D. Roosevelt State Park, in Georgia. Thin scaly bark, inch long thorns on some of the twigs. Thanks!
