Shore Plover

Thinornis novaeseelandiae

Description:

Small dotterel with unmistakable black face mask, black tipped red bill and red eye ring. Males are a bit brighter than females. A New Zealand endemic with a Red List status of Endangered.

Habitat:

Rocky wave platforms and estuaries. This one on a wave platform on South East Island in the Chatham Island group.

Notes:

Landing on this island is not permitted so images taken from a deflating Zodiac in a meter+ swell which was interesting. The good news is that captive breeding programmes have been successful with small numbers of birds reintroduced to some other offshore islands. To my knowledge wild breeding is still limited to the Chatham Island group at present.
