Western pygmy blue

Description:

The Western pygmy blue is the smallest butterfly in North America and one of the smallest in the world. Wingspread: 12 to 20 mm with males being smaller than females. Mostly grey with a reddish color on the upper portion of the underside of wings, along with some distinctive markings.

Habitat:

Spotted nectaring on flowers at the Falcon Lake State Park butterfly garden in south Texas. The surrounding area at the park is thorny bushland and part of the Tamaulipan brushland of the Lower Rio Grand Valley.

Notes:

Wide variety of host plants. Multiple broods throughout the year. Range in southwest of North America.
