Question mark caterpillar

Description:

It is a medium sized caterpillar that has a marbled black and white skin with yellow and orange spines, how amazing.The caterpillars have special breathing holes called spiracles, spiracles are what they use to breath.The spiracles lead up to the trachea.The tubes are also a respitory passage for many insects especially caterpillars.

Habitat:

They live in semi-urban enviorments that consist of hackberry trees, (celtis).The caterpillars that are seen in the pictures were found on the hackberry tree.

Notes:

The udults these caterpillars turn into question mark butterflies that have orange and black on the frontside of the wings and a leaf pattern on the back.The name comes from a mark on the back that has a mark.
