A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Hirundo rustica
Summer visitor to the UK, seen mainly in flight. Small & slim, with deep blue/black topside & pale underside with pinky-red throat & a distinctive long forked tail.
Vindolanda Roman Fort is a an open to the public roman site along Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. It is an exposed site, quite high, with a small valley at the bottom of the site.
I was so surprised to firstly see the swallows sitting so low to the ground & secondly to be able to get so close to them.

These are juveniles just a few weeks old so probably born (hatched) nearby and a month or so later will likely fly to somewhere in Africa.
This is a lovely spotting. To make it complete, and useful to researchers using this site for data, please edit this and add a reference (Wikipedia, Encyclopedia of Life, something else) about this species in the reference field of your spotting. Please do this for each photo you post. Thanks for helping to make Project Noah a complete reference tool for scientists.
I've been to Vindolanda -- what an amazing place!
