Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Sphyrapicus varius

Description:

Pattern on back closely matches the trees it inhabits. Pale yellow underside and dirty yellow in patches on back with black and white barring. Red throat and crown and black eye stripe. It is similar to the Red-naped Sapsucker. The Yellow-bellied has a full black outline on the red-throat and it lacks the red patch below the crown of the Red-naped.

Habitat:

This one returns every year to the same Willow tree. Sometimes it will fly to other Willows or Peppertrees.

Notes:

So far there has been about 4 separate spottings of these YBS in the central part of California. Way out of range vagrant.

This one shows up every year so far. And some in the south bay.
