Ferruginous Hawk

Buteo regalis

Description:

Some birds can vary in pattern. This one has a rusty brown on back and wings. Brown and white streaked head and neck. White throat and chest with rusty colored streaks and spots on under side of body and wings. Legs have feathers to the feet that are a white with rusty bars. Eyes are yellow.

Habitat:

This was spotted in open young alfalfa fields.

Notes:

This bird has come back to the same spot for the past few years I've been told. Not as shy as the Red-tail or the Northern Harrier that also have been patrolling the fields. Also nearby was a American Kestral. And no, we thought he caught something in the last image but he missed.
