Dryocopus pileatus
Red crested bird with a mainly black body, having white stripes on face that go down sides of throat. Possiibly the largest North American bird, size ranges 16-19 inches with weight of 8.8-14 ounces and a wing span of 26-30 inches.
They prefer habitats with large, mature hardwood trees.
We spotted two of these birds in the park. They were quite busy stripping the wood of some tall, mature trees.
