Great Basin Rattlesnake

Crotalus oreganus lutosus

Description:

Great Basin Rattlers are relatively benign in both temperment and toxicity. Like most species, they are non-aggresssive unless threatened, and will almost always retreat if given the chance.

Habitat:

This snake was found on a rocky, west-facing slope in a small canyon along the front range of the Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake City, Utah, at dusk.

Notes:

I found this snake four days earlier, but he crawled under a large rock and I wasn't able to get his picture. When I went back four days later, he was in the same vicinity, and he cooperated nicely!
