A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Psorophora ciliata
One of the largest mosquitos in the U.S. Black and white with shaggy scales on hind legs .
Breeds in flood plains.
Very aggressive biter. Much harder to kill than most mosquitos. Not abundant. I only encounter a few every year. This one jumped me as I got out of my truck. I swatted at it and it flew inside my truck and gave me an opportunity to photograph it. One of the few species whose larva feeds on the larva of other mosquito species. Gallinipper was the term used in the Southeastern U.S. to refer to large aggressive mosquitos in folktales, minstral and blues songs.
