Dumbbell Hook Thorn Moth

Macrocilix maia

Description:

The colours on the white wings depict two flies eating feces! According to https://www.tumblr.com/search/macrocilix... moth is said to release a pungent odour to backup the imagery, but I must confess I did not smell anything.

Habitat:

Drawn to the porch light of the cottage in Village Kolakham; a remote, forested area. This was actually right above the door and I stood on tip-toe to photograph it.

Notes:

You might like to read: http://www.science20.com/cool-links/macr... Interesting to note that an insect (the moth) has pictures of two insects (flies) on its wings.

I finally found a common name for this extraordinarily patterned moth: dumbbell hook thorn moth

http://translate.google.co.in/translate?...

It is actually: 刺啞鈴帶鉤蛾.

I got Google to translate it for me. Did it get it right?
