Winged Sumac, with fruit

Rhus copallina

Description:

Leaves pinnately compound, smooth edges (entire), with "wings" along the stem. The stem is red from the base of the first pair to the main trunk. Fruit is fleshy, magenta, and edible to humans. (It is VERY sour! I ate one.)

Habitat:

Grows throughout the east, and tolerates a wide variety of growing conditions. Although it does not tolerate shade.

Notes:

The native americans down here in Florida used the berries for a "lemonade" drink, according to the naturalist leading our hike.
