Horsehoof Fungus

Fomes fomentarius

Description:

Looks like a horse's hoof. This is a stem parasite.

Habitat:

Forest area in a remote part of West Bengal, India. Very close to Nepal border. I spotted the white orchids growing on the realy tall tree first and got out of the car to photograph those. Then I spotted the white fungus...when I looked up there were many more , jutting out almost linearly placed; one above the other. The top ones were in the shade and dark in colour; maybe older. (last photo)

Notes:

Wikipedia says the Ice Man was carrying this fungus in his pack. I first read about this fungus on PN...and now I have two spottings of my own. Thank you, PN.
