Tenodera sinensis
Female Green and brown praying mantis, size: 3.50 inches long (9 cm). Fluid is coming out of her swollen grenade-like abdomen to make a protective capsule called an ootheca around her eggs. The capsule is about 1/2-3/4 inch at this time. See video.
Open woodlands into meadow near a large lake. Beltzville State Park, PA
Please watch the video. I have never seen anything like it. Very very unusual and amazing on how the mantis makes its protective shell over the eggs.

Amazing that you captured this!!
I would say this spot amazed me the most. I never bothered to get interested in insects and spiders until Summer of 2011. I am so thrilled with my new passion/hobby.
I forgot to say that my first mantis was captured spawning. It's among my earliest spottings.
Spot on! But that was really yucky. You have to see the real thing any of the Alien movies, including AVP and Prometheus :)
Thanks Forest Dragon! This is one of my most stunning spots ever (of course doesn't include Cecropia Moth spots)
Carol, please consider adding this stunning series to the Marvelous Mantids of the North East mission!

the eggs won't hatch until they've had a cold winter and then feel spring coming.

very interesting! thanks for sharing !!
In time, lightworkerpeace, you will get over it. HA! Very funny! I wish I didn't have to cut the video short, but I was holding the branch and the mantis was starting to get disturbed by my presence.
Disturbing! Rated triple x!
Must take shower and seek psychotherapy after watching! ;D
Amazing capture, Carol. And the video is fabulous!
Awesome! I've never seen an Ootheca being made. Great spotting, photos and video!
I thought I was watching the "bug version" of ALIEN! LOL
