Fire-Bellied Toad

Bombina orientalis

Description:

Although the name implies that these are members of the toad family (Bufonidae), they are not. As confusing as it may be, the Fire-Bellied Toad is properly referred to as a Frog. There are several species (about 8) of the Fire-Bellied Toad, the more common species in the pet trade are: Oriental Fire-bellied Toad (Bombina orientalis) European Fire-bellied Toad (Bombina bombina)

Habitat:

The Oriental Fire-Bellied Toad is found in Korea, north-eastern China and some areas in the southeastern border of Russia. This frog is typically of the green color variety. The European Fire-Bellied Toad is native to mainland Europe. This frog is typically of the brown color variety.

Notes:

The oriental fire bellied toad, Bombina orientalis, is not only an extremely hardy species that is easy to keep in captivity, but it is also brightly coloured, active, and very amusing to observe. The dorsum (back) of the frog is moss green with contrasting black markings, while it's underside is a bright orange with more black splotches, giving it its common name. It also sports beautiful orange or red finger tips.
