Etruscan shrew (Νανομυγαλή)

Suncus etruscus

Description:

A dead Etruscan shrew, the smallest known mammal by mass, weighing only about 1.8 grams on average. It was spotted near the trunk of an old sweet chestnut tree, and I would not see it if they were not a couple of hornets trying to feed from its tiny cadaver. Still wondering what might have killed it, since it was bitten in its back and the front (belly) side was still intact (most likely by an owl, but wouldn't she swallow the whole of it? It was only about 3 cm big). Spotted, photographed and buried, in Tsagarada village, Pelion mountain, Greece.
