Luzon Fruit Bat

Otopteropus cartilagonodus

Description:

Chiroptera; Pteropodidae; Otopteropus; Otopteropus cartilagonodus Kock, 1969. This bat is endemic to the Philippines and its name should be sufficient to confirm its presence here, in Luzon. The berries on our currant tree have been disappearing rapidly lately and now I know why. These two have been eating their fill every night, but they are welcome guests. The local common name for this bat is "Panike".

Habitat:

Pictures taken where they roost all day, on a mahogany tree in our backyard. At night they can be seen in our front yard eating berries on our Currant Tree (Antidesma bunius) locally known as Bignay. Plant identification - http://www.stuartxchange.com/Bignay.html...

Notes:

I think photo #2 shows a male and photo #3 is a female, judging by the shape and size of their heads. The marks on the branches are made by their claws.
