Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis
A garter snake in Brooklyn for the last day of the Fall 2012 Snake Count! Woohoo!
Garter snakes are common throughout the Southeast and most of North America and are found in a wide variety of habitats, including meadows, marshes, woodlands, and hillsides. They tend to prefer moist, grassy environments and are often found near water, such as the edges of ponds, lakes, ditches, and streams.
This snake was found underneath a huge piece of wood from an old boat's deck, alongside a salt marsh. It had company too - another garter snake and a mouse.

Thanks Yasser! I headed back to Marine Park on Avenue U because I knew that I was getting close to the Bug Lover patch. It was a nice surprise to come across some garter snakes for Snake Week. And thanks for the Facebook feature!
Neil! right at the buzzer, haha! This might be one of the only snakes submitted to PN from Brooklyn. Awesome shots.
Thank you, Carol!
