Sandhill Crane

Grus canadensis

Description:

Large wading bird, gray with red/maroon eye patch and long thick bunches of tail feathers. Very graceful bird.

Habitat:

Spotted in huge numbers on marshy grasslands along Payne's Prairie in Gainesville, FL.

Notes:

Hundreds spotted relatively close for great photo opportunities and close enough to hear unspoiled vocalizations as many were paired up. Great opportunity!
