Bird dung mimic spider

Phrynarachne sp. family: Thomisidae

Description:

Camouflage is the best survival strategy in the wild. But this Bird dung mimic crab spider has taken camouflage to the next level. Mimicking the dung not only helps it to be hidden from hunters but also attracts flies. It even creates the look of dried up splash of bird dropping using it’s own white silk. It even has a trick up it’s sleeves. Smell! Long Yu of Hubei University in China and his team have shown that the spider Phrynarachne ceylonica‘s foul smell may help it attract prey and deter predators.

Habitat:

Seen at a rainforest.
