Humpback Whale

Megaptera novaeangliae

Description:

Taken in Chatham Straight on the backside of Admiralty Island which is between Sitka and Juneau Alaska. Another from our uncle David!

Habitat:

Humpbacks spend Winters in Hawaii and Summers in Alaska. The calves are born in the warm waters of Hawaii and then the mothers and babies will migrate to Southeast Alaska in the summers to feed on the large numbers of Herring that are available. An interesting feeding practice of Humpbacks is called bubble net feeding which involves a coordinated effort of herding herring into a ball of fish using bubbles and sounds then bursting through the surface of the water mouths wide open, scooping up all the herring they can.
