Well-deserved SOTD, kozoga! When I first saw the photo, the bird looked like it had the head of a cobra snake.

Congratulations kozoga, you Red-throated Loon is our Spotting of the Day!

"How elegant with its triangular red throat patch and equally red iris! This Red-throated Loon (Gavia stellata) is our Spotting of the Day. Also know as red-throated diver, this loon (family Gaviidae) is a migratory aquatic bird found in the northern hemisphere which breeds primarily in the Arctic and winters in northern coastal waters. It has inspired a poem by Scottish poet Alexander Hutchison; here is the last verse:
"Who calls to the dark,
who calls to the wind on
the surface of the water?
Who prompts the others
to dip and rise? Eyes like
seeds of garnet. Lightest
and brightest: gavia stellata
the red-throated diver."
