A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Agapostemon sp.
Roughly 12 millimeters in body length, colored as shown, with bright metallic green head and thorax, black-and white-banded abdomen.
Bee was visiting flowers of a lone, blooming saltcedar tree (Tamarix sp.) in a vast open field of degraded shortgrass praire with sunflower, yucca, prickly-pear cacti, and scattered elm trees.
This is either Agapostemon coloradinus or A. virescens. Identification to species hinges on characters not readily visible in images of live, wild specimens.
