Pine hawk-moth; Esfinge del pino

Sphinx pinastri

Description:

Big caterpillar that I found crossing frenetically a mountain road in a pine forest. The pine hawk-moth is a big moth of the Sphingidae family that live in the pine forests. The caterpillar body lacks any hairs, but it has a "horn" at the posterior end. Young ones are green with white lines on their sides but the one shown here is close to pupate and has changed its coloration. They feed on pine or spruce leaves.

Habitat:

Spotted crossing a mountain road at a pine tree forest. Reserva de la Biosfera del Real Sitio de San Ildefonso-El Espinar.
