New Zealand Kingfisher

Halcyon sancta vagans

Description:

Also called Sacred Kingfisher or Kotare. Crown deep green, grading at sides to ultramarine. Forehead deep green, often flecked with buff. Tail brown washed blue. Chin and throat pale buff to white. Long dark brown bill. Legs dark brown.

Habitat:

Lives in a wide range of habitats epescially near mudflats, tidal estuaries and mangrove swamps.

Notes:

Catches insects such as wetas, dragonflies, wasps, beetles and spiders. On tidial estuaries small crabs are its main diet. Larger prey includes mice and small birds especially silvereyes.
