White-throated Kingfisher

Halcyon smyrnensis

Description:

Colourful bird with a red beak waiting to catch breakfast. the white " bib" gives it the name.

Habitat:

The third of the large lakes near my house...this one is a little further away than the other two. The sad thing is there is a market in front and a lot of rubbish has accumulated on the side of the lake...not to mention the flowers used in worship that are immersed! Then there are the huts dotting the perimeter....

Notes:

This is the state bird of West Bengal, India. The state where I live. Bengalis are known for their love of fish...so is this bird. Makes sense!
