Four-Toothed Mason Wasp

Monobia quadridens

Description:

Four-Toothed Mason Wasp inspecting a Carpenter Bee hole. Little did it know, that particular nest was already occupied. :)

Habitat:

Decorative driftwood in landscaping, rural deciduous area, Clermont County

Notes:

Fun fact: They make their nests in abandoned Carpenter Bee or Mud Dauber nests, or other tube-like structures. They lay their eggs in mud-capped chambers, and stock the chambers with paralyzed caterpillars. Once the eggs hatch, they feed on the paralyzed insects and then pupate, and eventually chew through the mud to start their adult life.
