Cockleshell or Clamshell Orchid

Prosthechea cochleata

Description:

I was delighted to find this Orchid blooming in the wild. I have one in my garden (whose flowers are slightly different: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/157...). This is also the National Flower of Belize, which is very close to Campeche and where it is called the Black Orchid. The flowers last up to 2 months and older blooms can get a bit battered.

Habitat:

Forest trail, Mayan Ruins of Hormiguero.
