Thread-legged Assassin Bug

Emesaya brevipennis

Description:

I saw two of these beauties today. One of my new favorite insects! I'd never heard of them before! They were found hanging out on the screen by my porch. The legs look like zebra stripes.

Habitat:

Eastern North America, mixed deciduous/coniferous forests with generous supply of rainwater.

Notes:

Thanks to Ken Childs for pointing this subfamily out to me. It really helped me find the species!

Thanks Vipin! I saw one yesterday similar to the size of your spottting! I also saw it fly. Unfortunately it had flown away before I could photograph it, but I did see another this big as well. They fly a lot like crane flies.

Interesting, Keith! Too bad I did not see it fly. I checked again this morning, but they both had moved on.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a dobsonfly fly. I remember catching fishflies out of the air when I was in college. The Thread-legged Assassin Bug that I saw kind of glided in a slow, graceful manner.

Thank you for your very kind and true words Aaron! It's a wonderful place out there, just me and the assassins! :-)

Great find and awesome photos! Just goes to show that you never know what you'll find... but you have to get outside first! :-)

Thank you very much Keith! A kind word from such a bug expert is touching! I'll submit it to Bug Guide so they can have a New York datapoint! I did not see them fly, do they fly like dobsonflies? Thanks again for your nice comment!

Great spotting. These are very cool bugs that are not commonly seen. I've only ever seen one and BugGuide has no photos from New York, which is pretty well covered. And you have pictures of TWO! Did you get to see them fly? It is pretty cool the way they fly.

These were cool! I hope I can see them again! I've not seen the wheel bug yet. I did not know it extended to my range. Thanks for the factoids and nice comments!

Is this the first time this insect has been featured here at PN. WOW again! They are just too cool. You know my favorite "regular" insect not including moths is the Wheel Bug.
