Cladonia chlorophaea group
Pale gray to green cup lichen growing on a piece of wood. The Cladonia chlorophaea group of lichens contains 3 to 4 different species which are notoriously difficult to identify in terms of morphology. Lichens are composite organisms comprised of fungal filaments being inhabited by algae or cyanobacteria.
Growing on a piece of wood (broken off of a rotting log) near the side of a wildlife trail in a dense mixed hardwood/coniferous forest in Northwest Georgia (Gordon County), US.
