Amblyomma americanum

Description:

This particular campground tended to have large volumes of ticks (common on Long Island). We found them crawling on the outside of our tent fairly regularly. Females are reddish brown with a single white spot on the dorsum. Although Lone Star Ticks are not known to transmit Lyme Disease, they can transmit other diseases such as Ehrlichiosis and Southern Tick – Associated Rash Illness.

Habitat:

Wooded campground within temperate forest. Cedar Point County Park, New York.

Notes:

This species of tick is large and fairly fast moving. They are also aggressive feeders and have a variety of hosts.
