Western Tanager

Piranga ludoviciana

Bright yellow bird with black wings and yellow wingbars. This male is in basic plumage so he shows only a very faint orange coloring on his face. This will darken and become prominent as he molts into alternate plumage.

This bird was coming to a feeder at a residence. The property had mature trees and only some understory.

Western Tanagers are known to travel far out of range in the winter.
