North American Porcupine

Erethizon dorsatum

Description:

Large, slow-moving rodents that are covered in modified hairs (quills) which serve as a defense against predators. They are usually black or brown in color with white or yellow tipped hairs. It is sometimes referred to as the "quill pig" in America. When a predator or perceived threat gets too close, it will swing it's tail and back end toward them in an attempt to drive them away. Those who aren't quick enough to move out of the way will leave with a face full of quills. Because the quills are barbed, they are very hard to remove.

Notes:

Was hiking today and almost walked right past this one! It was sitting quietly on a small path in between two hollow trees I've known about for years. Today, I finally found out who lives in them! Hope the flash didn't bother it too much. It was too dark in that part of the forest to get a proper focus. Largest porcupine I've ever seen, and it appeared to be in excellent health.
