Horned powder-post beetle

Apatides fortis

Description:

About 12-14 millimeters in body length, large for Bostrichidae. Note the pair of hook-like horns on the front edge of the pronotum (top of thorax).

Habitat:

Urban residential neighborhood. Native Sonoran Desert exists in pockets, vacant lots, and consists of prickly-pear and cholla cacti, creosote bush, desert willow, palo verde, and mesquite trees.

Notes:

This specimen was attracted to the porch light of my apartment at night.
