Pirate spider

Australomimetus sp.

Description:

About 20mm legspan (flexed). Translucent, banded, hairy legs, large palps, black markings appeared to be inside the abdomen. (Maybe a furled Jolly Roger?)

Habitat:

On a brick wall in a country nature reserve.

Notes:

Thanks for direction Tamar. A male. Australia seems to have it's own genus for Mimetidae. Species search here http://bie.ala.org.au/species/urn:lsid:b... Also read here https://repository.uwa.edu.au/R/-?func=d... http://www.arachne.org.au/01_cms/details... Check Australomimetus audax and Australomimetus maculosus

Very nice! 'Grey house spider' looks very similar to this. The other one doesn't have quite as much abdominal translucency as these. I'd love to get to species but will need to look very closely. Maybe later. Thanks Stephen.

I have verified images for Australomimetus but have not placed them on my web site yet so I am unable to point you there Following is an image verified by Doctor Ron Atkinson as http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/171... Australomimetus sp. The one I mix that up with is this one http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/166... I think you have the right ID though

Hmm.. no eye-patch or wooden leg... and CSIRO says no Mimetus recorded in Australia. This will be an interesting search. http://bie.ala.org.au/species/urn:lsid:b...

My Pirate Spider from Long Island, NY. Photos not quite as nice as yours but you can see the similarities.

Hey Mark, this guy looks a lot like a Pirate Spider, Family Mimetidae. I'm having trouble finding a good photo reference online at the moment but I know there are Pirate Spiders in Australia.
