Major Sallow Moth

Feralia major

Description:

Stunning little moth! Lichen mimic, with an intricate pattern in green and brown. This species varies in color across its range, brown in the north and more green in the south.

Habitat:

On Emory campus. Observed sleeping in the corner of a window frame (outside). Would have been much less conspicuous if it were on a tree trunk, where it belongs (lichen mimic). Feralia species live near conifers, their preferred source of food and shelter (caterpillars mimic pine needles).
